日本でも最近浸透してきて、カリフォルニアロールを筆頭に、普段の食卓にもサラダなどで使ったりしてちょこちょこ登場する果物ですね。アメリカ、特に西海岸は主な原産地であるメキシコから近いこともありとても愛されています。そんなアボカドの中には主張し過ぎる種がありますね。今回、品種改良により種なしアボカドが実現したというニュースが入りました。そもそもアボカドとは・・・？wiki基本情報はこちら

アボカドとは、クスノキ科の常緑高木。メキシコと中央アメリカ原産で、熱帯各地で広く栽培される。果実は球形または洋なし形で、やや紫褐色を帯びた緑色、多量の脂肪と蛋白質を含み、そのまま生で食べたり、アイスクリーム、サラダなどに入れて食べる。アリゲーターペアー alligator pearともいう

どうやって種ナシが可能に！？

今回の種なしアボカドはスペイン産だそうです。実は、南米やヨーロッパの一部の地域では以前から存在していたそうですが、どうして世に出回っていなかったのでしょうか？

無種子アボカドは、種をまったく使用しないで発芽したアボカドの無花菜の花です。果物はスペインで栽培され、通常はパリの食品市場に送られる12月中にのみ入手可能ですが、今年は一部の店舗でM＆S(イギリスのスーパーマーケットチェーンの「マークス＆スペンサー」)でが限定的に供給を得ることができました。

サイズは7㎝ほどでカクテルアボカドとして、12月のみの期間限定で販売されそうです。7個入りで2.60ドルぐらいで販売していたようですが種無しアボカドの長さは7センチほどで、形状はどちらかというとキュウリやズッキーニに近いですね。

あの種がなくなると、調理が劇的にしやすくなる反面、何だか品種改良の末の産物だとすると怖いですね・・・種なしアボカドはどうやって種の存続をするのでしょうか・・・想像が膨らみますね。話題性が大きいので日本でもお目にかかる日が近いかもしれませんね！
